#0164 Verona Renova - Via Mazzini
Verona, Italy (2020)
from the limited edition series “Verona Renova”

Captured in April 2020 during the lockdown, this photograph portrays the historic Piazza Bra at the intersection with Via Mazzini. The city, in its unusual silence and absence of traffic, reveals the harmony of its forms and the timeless beauty of its buildings. The surrounding emptiness highlights the majesty of the architecture, offering a unique perspective that invites viewers to rediscover the relationship between urban spaces and the way we experience them..

This image is part of Alessandro Gloder’s Verona Renova project—a title inspired by an anagram of “Verona” and the Latin phrase Res Nova (“something new, renewal”). Included in the book of the same name, also titled Verona Renova and available on this website, the absence of crowds and traffic emphasizes the beauty of historic buildings, the play of light on the cobblestones, and the charm of urban details usually hidden in the city’s daily rush.

LIBRO VERONA RENOVA

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN THE BOOK VERONA RENOVA?

Verona Renova is a photography book featuring 115 black-and-white images taken in April 2020, during the lockdown, when the city revealed itself in an unprecedented light—silent and devoid of human presence. Conceived as a visual and historical record of a singular moment, the project offers an intimate, suspended view of Verona, portrayed in its architectural and poetic essence.

The volume, in a panoramic 22x31 cm format, includes 160 pages with texts in both Italian and English, written by journalists and scholars of the city. The printing was carried out by Trifolio, a Verona-based leader in the production of photography books, on paper supplied by Fedrigoni.
